Surabhi Kadam
HAMILTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Pioneer Energy Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending March 23rd, 2015.

Each Pioneer Energy OUA Athlete of the Week will receive a gift card and a dri-fit T-shirt, courtesy of Pioneer Energy.
FEMALE: Surabhi Kadam (Woodbridge) (Markham, Ont.) – 5th yr – Waterloo Warriors – Badminton
The Waterloo Warriors captured their first OUA Badminton championship banner since 2010 thanks in large part to the performance of fifth-year student-athlete Surabhi Kadam(Woodbridge)
Kadam was unstoppable this past weekend, winning gold in both women's singles and mixed doubles, on her way to being named the Women's Most Valuable Player.
Competing in singles, Kadam did not drop a set the entire tournament and defeated Western's Adrianna Giuffre 21-4, 21-16 on Sunday to capture the women's title.
She followed that up with a thrilling come from behind victory to win the mixed doubles title with partner Wesley Marr (Toronto/Lawrence Park CI) (13-21,21-17,21-16).
The Warriors accumulated 63 points over the course of the championship, 18 more than second place Western University, to claim their first OUA Badminton championship banner in five years.
MALE: Aaron Squires (St. Thomas, Ont.) – 4th yr – Laurier Golden Hawks – Curling
Fourth-year skip Aaron Squires led the Laurier Golden Hawks to a silver medal this past weekend at the CIS-Curling Canada Championship.
Laurier finished the round robin with a 6-1 record (2nd overall) before defeating Saint Mary's 9-2 in the semifinals.  In the gold medal match, Squires and the Golden Hawks fell to the Alberta Golden Bears 6-4 in an extremely close game that was 5-4 heading home.
Their silver medal is the best finish by a Laurier men's team since winning the inaugural CIS championship in 2007-08.
For his efforts, Squires was named a first-team All-Canadian along with fellow Golden Hawks Richard Krell and Fraser Reid. It is the second consecutive year that Squires has earned this honour.
VADODARA: A 17-year-old girl from the city, who had migrated to Canada eight years ago, is all set to pursue her dream of lifting the US Open Badminton title. The championship will kick off from July 19 in California. Having picked up title of top seed in Canada, Surabhi Kadam, who left the city when she was just nine, is now aiming big.

"Winning the US Open will be a great achievement for me. I have been undergoing rigorous training and strict regime of diet. I spent three weeks' training in Hyderabad and was busy practicing, doing work outs and preparating for the US Open," said Surabhi, who has been playing badminton since she was four.

The fact that Surabhi travelled all the way to India from Canada only to be trained by former badminton champion Gopichand Pullela shows her dedication to the game. A girl who sat at the badminton courts watching her uncle - also her coach - and kids at Bal Bhavan in the city, Surabhi has come a long way.

She won her first title at the Under-10 state-level badminton championship at Bharuch while being coached by Jayesh Bhalavala at the Sayaji Vihar club. In 2001, when she went on to win the Under-10 title in Thane, she was spotted by badminton great Prakash Padukone, who now coaches at the badminton academy in Bangalore. Padukone saw great potential in her and encouraged her. In Canada, Surabhi participated in various tournaments and with each game she improved and went on to be recognised as one of the top badminton players there. She is currently being coached by Stephane Cadieux at The Badminton and Racket Club in Toronto.

In the city to meet her relatives, Surabhi is glad to be home. "I see a big change in badminton culture here than what it was when I left. There has been an increase in the interest level and more coaching centres have opened up," she said.
