David Dhawan
Name: David Dhawan
Birthdate: 16th of August, 1960
Zodiac: Leo
Marital Status: David Dhawan tied the knot with KarunaDhawana and the couple has two sons, Varun and Rohit.Rohit debuted as a director with ‘DesiBoyz’ whereas Varun made his entry into Bollywood as an actor with Karan Johar’s film called ‘Student Of The Year’.
Biography: David Dhawan began his long and illustrious career as an editor and later he started directing films. He mostly directs comedy films with personalities such as Salman Khan, Govinda, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, RaveenaTandon, Katrina Kaif and Karisman Kapoor, in the lead roles. For the supporting roles, David Dhawan normally casts Johnny Lever, Kader Khan, PareshRawal and Shakti Kapoor. He is greatly inspired by Manmohan Desai’s ways of directing films.
In the year 1993, David Dhawan released ‘Aankhen’, starring Chunky Pandey, Govinda and Raj Babbar in the lead roles. This film was a huge hit at the box office and this film also became one of David Dhawan’s biggest hit film. ‘Partner’ which was released in 2007 and starred Salman Khan, Govinda, Katrina Kaif and Lara Dutta, was also a huge success and this movie was greatly appreciated by the audience. This film was a remake of the Hollywood movie called ‘Hitch’ (2005) directed by Andy Tennant. Once David Dhawan had released two films on the very same day (‘DeewanaMastana’ and ‘Mr.&Mrs.Khiladi’, both of which were released by him on the 10th of October, 1997) and both these films went on to become box office hits. Presently, David Dhawan is involved with the board of the Asian Academy of Film & Television as well as the Asian School Of Media Studies where he had once been honoured with the prestigious Academy Award, which he received from Sandeep Marwah.
In 2008 and 2009, he appeared as the judge on the sets of ‘NachBaliye’ and ‘Hans Baliye’ respectively.
The pair of Dhawan- Govinda in films became a permanent success mantra in the 1990s. A very simple and funny script combined with desilatkajhaktka scenes alongwith the right quantity of romance and action soon became one of the best means of deriving entertainment. This duo has worked together in about 17 films of which 11 are hits. Their very first film was the not so successful ‘Taaqatwar’ released in 1989. Two years later in 1991, they had their first above average release together, a film titled ‘Swarg’, starring Govinda along with Rajesh Khanna, Madhavi, PareshRawal, Neena Gupta and Juhi Chawla. Following ‘Swarg’, this duo started giving back to back hits: ‘Shola AurShabnam’ (1992) and ‘Aankhen’ (1993). This success continued for a series of films such as ‘Coolie No. 1’, ‘Raja Babu’, ‘DeewanaMastana’, ‘SaajanCHaleSasural’, ‘Hero No. 1’, ‘HaseenaMaanJayegi’ and ‘Bade MIyanChoteMiyan’. After a couple of successful film, they met with their first failure, the much delayed release ‘BanarasiBabu’ (1997) starring Govinda along with Kader Khan, Bindu, Shakti Kapoor and Ramya. However in the year 2001, this duo found their way back on track with the comedy flick titled ‘Jodi No. 1’ starring Govinda himself, Sanjay Dutt, Monica Bedi and Twinkle Khanna in the lead roles.Dhawan and Govindatogether thus forms a star pair who hit the bulls eye on a couple of occasions.
Dhawan and Govinda’s 17th release was ‘Do Knot Disturb’, starring Govinda, RiteshDeshmukh, Lara Dutta and Sushmita Sen.
David Dhawan is one of the very few directors who creates their own style of music for their films. In his initial days as director he used to sign up BapiLahiri for his films (namely for ‘AagKaGola’, ‘Aankhen’, ‘Aandhiyan’ and ‘Shola AurShabnam’. But then, the actual David Dhawan style of music came with his ventures with renowned music directors Anu Malik and Anand-Milind.
His collaboration with Anu Malik yielded westernized tunes in movies like ‘Shaadi No. 1’, ‘MujhseShaadiKarogi’, ‘Hum Kisi Se KumNahi’, ‘ChorMachaayeShor’, ‘HaseenaMaanJayeegi’, ‘Mr and Mrs Khiladi’, ‘GharwaliBaharwali’, Biwi No. 1’, ‘Judwaa’, ‘Yaarana’ and ‘Taaqatwar’.
David Dhawan along with Anand –Milind also formed a strong team. Together they blended both Indian as well as western music into Dhawan’s films such as ‘Chale Mere Bhai’, ‘BanarasiBabu’, ‘Hero No.1’, ‘Loafer’, ‘Coolie NO. 1’, ‘Raja Babu’, ‘EenaMeenaDeeka’, ‘BolRadhaBol’ and Swarg.
Apart from Anand-Milind and Anu Malik, David Dhawan had also worked with new music composers such as Pritam, Sajid-Wajid, HimeshReshammiya, Vishal-Shekhar and Shankar-Ekhsaan-Loy. He had also extracted good and successful music from the music director duo Nadeem-Shravan in his films ‘SaajanChaleSasural’ and in ‘Do Knot Disturb’.
One of his upcoming releases is a film called ‘ChashmeBuddoor’ starring Ali Zafar, Divyendu Sharma, TaapseePannu and Suddharth. This film which is a remake of a 1981 film (having the same name) is set to release on the 5th of April, 2013.
As a director some of his filmography includes ‘Aandhiyan’ (1989), ‘Taaqatwar’ (1989), ‘Swarg’ (1990), ‘AagKaGola’ (1990), ‘Jurrat’ (1990), ‘Shola AurShabnam’ (1992), ‘BolRadhaBol’ (1992), ‘Aankhen’ (1993), ‘Raja Babu’ (1994), ‘EenaMeenaDeeka’ (1994), ‘Andaz’ (1994), ‘Yaraana’ (1995), ‘Coolie No. 1’ (1995), ‘Loafer’ (1996), ‘Mr. and Mrs.Khiladi’ (1997), ‘BanarasiBabu’ (1997), ‘Judwa’ (1997), ‘DeewanaMastana’ (1997), ‘SaajanChaleSasural’ (1997), ‘Bade MiyanChoteMiyan’ (1998), ‘Hero No. 1’ (1998), ‘GharwaliBaharwali’ (1999), ‘Biwi No. 1’ (1999), ‘HaseenaMaanJaayegi’ (1999), ‘Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge’ (2000), ‘Kunwara’ (2000), ‘Chal Mere Bhai’ (2000), ‘Jodi No. 1’ (2001), ‘ChorMachaayeShor’ (2002), ‘YehHaiJalwa’ (2002), ‘Hum KisiseKumNahi’ (2002), EkAurEkGyarah’ (2003), ‘MujhseShaadiKarogi’ (2004), ‘Shaadi No. 1’ (2005), ‘Maine PyaarKyunKiya’ (2005), ‘Partner’ (2007), ‘Do Knot Disturb’ (2009), ‘Rascals’ (2011), ‘Sanki’ (2011) and ‘ChashmeBuddoor’ (2013).
