Biography: Ayan Mukerji is a well-known Indian movie director and actor who was born on the 24th of August, 1983. At a ripe age of 26 years, he directed his very first film, ‘Wake Up Sid’ (2009), produced by Karan Johar and Hiroo Yash Johar and starring Kashmira Shah, Ranbir Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Konkona Sen Sharma, Rahul Khanna and Supriya Pathak. This film which was released on the 2nd of October, 2009 was a huge success at the box office. Ayan Mukerji was awarded the Filmfare Award in the Best Debutante Director (Male) category for this film.Ayan Mukerji even wrote the screenplay for ‘Wake Up Sid’.
Ayan Mukerji’s father, Deb Mukherji is a renowned Bengali movie actor. Ayan is also the cousin of famous film personalities like Rani Mukherjee, Tanisha Mukherjee and Kajol.
Ayan Mukerji started working as an assistant director under his brother-in-law, Ashutosh Gowariker, for the film ‘Swades’ (2004), starring Shahrukh Khan, Gayatri Joshi and Kishori Balal. He also worked as an assistant director for Karan Johar for the film ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’, starring Shahrukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta and Kirron Kher. As an actor, he appeared in Geoffery Henderson directed 2010 film, ‘Hiding Place’. Here he had donned the role of an A-R-F Agent.
One of his upcoming films is ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ which is a romantic flick starring Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor in the lead roles and Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur in supporting roles. This film would also be having the Bollywood diva, Madhuri Dixit in a dance number which has been choreographed by Farah Khan and this film is all set to hit the theatre screens on the 31st of May, 2013.

Mukerji was born in a Bengali Brahmin family. He is the son of Bengali film actor Deb Mukherjee. His grandfather Sashadhar Mukherjee, was a film producer, who established Filmalaya Studios in Mumbai, and produced films like Dil Deke Dekho (1959), Love in Simla (1960), Ek Musafir Ek Hasina (1962) and Leader (1964). The studio is still run by his extended family.[3][4] He is also the nephew of Joy Mukherjee and the first cousin ofKajol Mukherjee, Tanisha Mukherjee and Rani Mukherjee and part of the larger Mukherjee-Samarth family.[5][6]
Mukerji studied at Jamnabai Narsee School. He later attended Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology but dropped out after the first year to become an assistant director on Swades.[7]

Career[edit]

Mukherjee started his career as an assistant to Ashutosh Gowariker, his brother-in-law, on the 2004 film, Swades, and later to Johar on Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. After taking a short break from filmmaking, Mukerji wrote the screenplay for Wake Up Sid and gave it to Johar who decided it should become a film.[4] The film starred Konkona Sen Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor in lead roles and went on to become a commercial and critical success.[8]
Mukerji's next film, also under Karan Johar's banner Dharma Productions, was Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, with Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor in lead roles. It was a huge commercial success. The movie has crossed 1 billion in the box office in just 7 days. It became the fourth highest grossing Indian movie of all time.[9][10]
As of October 2013, Mukerji's next project is scheduled to be direction of a superhero film starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.[11]
On several occasions, Mukerji has confessed his obsession with Ranbir, saying he cannot think beyond Ranbir. He also added that his relationship with Ranbir is like an "old marriage".
Although Mukerji belongs to a Bengali family, he said he will never make a Bengali film because it would not reach many people.[12]
