Biography

Mahesh Manjrekar is an Indian film director, actor, writer and producer. He is credited with directing films like Vaastav, Astitva and Viruddh. Besides direction he has acted in several films including some of his own productions. He gained acclaim for his performance in the 2002 movie Kaante. He played a negative role in Telugu film Okkadunnadu and in 2008 played the role of gangster Javed in Slumdog Millionaire.

Manjrekar started his acting career in 1984 with the Marathi play Aflatoon, which paved way for him as an award winning producer with more plays like Dhyanimani, Doctor Tumhisuddha, Gidhade, Akashmaat, All the Best and Asecha Amhi Sare.

He embarked on his journey as a film maker with the award winning Marathi film Aai for which he won a Filmfare for the best director and also bagged the Screen Videocon award that year.


Once there, there was no stopping for this man, and he took his vision further with the highly acclaimed Vaastav with Sanjay Dutt. But initial success then gave way to a series of not-so-memorable ventures such as Nidaan, and Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rahta Hai, which flopped miserably at the box office. Some of his recent directorial ventures include Viruddh, Padmashree Laloo Prasad Yadav and It Was Raining That Night.

Besides directing, Manjrekar has also been active as an actor, writer, and producer and even as a playback singer (Kaante).

Mahesh Manjrekar (Marathi: महेश मांजरेकर) (born 16 August 1958) is a Marathi director, actor, writer and producer.[2] He is credited with directing the critically acclaimed films Vaastav: The Reality (1999), Astitva(2000) and Viruddh... Family Comes First (2005). He has won a National Film Award and two Star Screen Awards. Besides direction, he has acted in several films, including some of his own productions. He first gained acclaim as an actor for his performance in the 2002 film Kaante, and later played negative roles in the Telugu film Okkadunnadu (2007) and as the gangster Javed in the film Slumdog Millionaire (2008). He played the role of Shivaji Maharaj in Marathi film Me Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy. He also played the role of Harpist Dongara in the Aakhri Chunauti series of episodes in C.I.D.. Manjrekar has also won million hearts by his acclaimed negative role as inspector D.R. Talpade in the movie Wanted starring superstar Salman Khan. He was also suspected to have links with the Mumbai underworld and was questioned by the police.[3] He was a MNS Candidate from Mumbai North West in 2014 Lok Sabha Elections but lost to Gajanan Kirtikar of Shiv Sena.[4][5]
