Biography

Chunky Panday is an Indian film actor. He has appeared in over 55 movies in a career that has spanned over two decades and has been nominated once for his supportive role in 'Tezaab'. He is the Amitabh Bachchan of Bangladesh.

Chunky's real name is chuua, but is also known as Chandrakant Pandey. He married Bhavna in 1998 and has two daughters. he decided to make a comeback to Bollywood during 2002 and ended up appearing in over a dozen movies. Apart from appearing in movies, Chunky is also involved in a business 'Bollywood Electric' which hosts stage shows. He and his wife Bhavna also run a health food restaurant in Mumbai, India.

Starting out his Bollywood career in 1987, with the film Daraar, Pandey shot to the spotlight with his role as Munna's (Anil Kapoor) friend in the movie Tezaab in (1988). This was the first big break for Pandey as he received a nomination as a best supporting actor from his performance in the film. Since then he has appeared in many films with mixed success throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Unfortunately for Pandey, many of his films in which he had the leading role never did well at the box office. It was always his secondary leading roles that made the most impact. He was noted from his pairing with Govinda in the blockbuster hit film Aankhen (1993) and with Sunny Deol in Paap Ki Duniya (1988), Vishwatma (1992) and Lootere (1993) all of which were box office hits.

His career began to fade from the limelight in the mid 90s due to the rising popularity and demand of megastars such as Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, and Salman Khan. As a result, Pandey traveled to Bangladesh in the late 1990s to keep his acting career alive. Surprisingly Chunky became a superstar overnight in Bangladesh, starring in numerous Bengali movies. Ironically, Pandey had never spoken Bangla and his voice was dubbed over.

After his hiatus from Bollywood since 1999, Pandey returned in 2002 playing supporting roles in Qayamat: City Under Threat (2003), Elaan (2005) and Ssukh (2005).

Pandey was then critically acclaimed for his performance in Ram Gopal Varma's gangster thriller D - Underworld Baadshah (2005). Due to the praise, Pandey announced a full fledged comeback to Bollywood. In 2006 he won praise for his comical performance as a Nepali gangster in Apna Sapna Money Money and made a brief appearance in Don (2006).

Recently he appeared in the multi-starrer action comedy Fool and Final. He is also associated with the upcoming Johnny Depp movie Shantaram.

Chunky Pandeys (Rupinder Randhawa's father) is a judge in the very popular indian reality show, zara nachke dikha along with the very popular indian actress Malaika Arora khan.

Suyash 'Chunky' Pandey (born 26 September 1962) is an Indian film actor who works in Bollywood films. He has acted in over 80 movies in a career that has spanned over two decades. In 1989 he was nominated for aFilmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his role in Tezaab. In most movies, he was cast as a second-lead to leading senior actors like DharmendraJeetendraSunny Deol and Sanjay Dutt. Pandey has also worked as a lead actor in a few movies in Bangladesh. Since 2003, Pandey works as a character actor in Bollywood movies generally in comic roles.

Career[edit]

1987–93: Debut and Early Success[edit]

Film Producer Pahlaj Nihalani gave Chunky Pandey his first break in 1987, with the multi-starrer film Aag Hi Aag opposite Neelam Kothari. The film was a hit. It was followed by another successful film, Paap ki Duniya with Sunny Deol and Neelam. Subsequently, Pandey appeared in many multi-hero films from 1987 to 1993. In most films, he was cast as the second lead to senior actors like DharmendraJeetendraSunny Deol and Sanjay Dutt. Some of those hit films are Paap Ki Duniya (1988), Khatron Ke Khiladi (1988), Ghar Ka Chiraag(1989), Zahreelay (1990), Rupaye Dus KarodVishwatma (1992) and Aankhen (1993). Most of Pandey's films where he was the leading hero such as "Mitti Aur Sona", "Kasak", "Khilaaf" did not fare well at the box office.
In 1988, Pandey was appreciated for his supporting role in N. Chandra's super-hit movie, Tezaab featuring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. Pandey played the character of Babban, Munna's (Anil Kapoor) friend. [1] The song, "So gaya yeh jahaan" featured on Pandey in this film was very popular. For his performance in "Tezaab", Pandey was nominated for the Filmfare award for the Best Supporting Actor.
His pairing opposite actress Neelam was appreciated and the pair had a string of five hits: Aag Hi Aag (1987), Paap Ki Duniya (1988), Khatron Ke Khiladi (1988), Ghar Ka Chiraag (1989), and Mitti Aur Sona (1989).
In 1993, he starred as one of the lead actors along with Govinda in the David Dhawan directed film Aankhen. It became the biggest box-office hit of 1993. Unfortunately, the credit of Aankhen's success went to Govinda and director David Dhawan. Pandey could not capitalize on the movie's mega-success. It was his last successful film as the hero.

1994–2003: Career slump and hiatus[edit]

The advent of the 90s saw a new wave of long-lasting actors like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan taking on roles as "romantic heroes" while Ajay Devgan, Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty grabbed the "action hero" roles. Pandey found it difficult to slot himself in either category. In addition, by the late nineties, solo-hero films were back in vogue instead of the multi-hero films in which Pandey was generally cast.
Chunky grew increasingly tired of playing second fiddle to more prominent actors but had difficulty being seen as marketable outside of supporting household names. "I was offered hero ke bhai ka (brother of the hero) role and some shit," Chunky said. "I (told them), 'Boss, not happening.'"[2]
Frustrated with the lack of meaningful roles and lack of faith from producers Pandey's career in Bollywood as lead hero began to fade. Pandey took an hiatus from Bollywood in the late 90s and then he moved to Bangladeshi cinema. Because he didn't speak Bengali, his voice were dubbed in most of his movies there. Notable films he acted in were Swami Keno Asami and Besh Korechi Prem Korechi.Meyera a Manush

2003 to present: Return to Bollywood[edit]

Chunky Pandey returned to Bollywood in 2003 playing minor supporting roles in Qayamat: City Under ThreatElaan, and Don: The Chase Begins Again.
In 2005, Pandey was critically acclaimed for his dark role as a underworld gangster in the Ram Gopal Varma film D – Underworld Badshah. Director Ram Gopal Varma was so impressed with Chunky that he roped him in for Darwaza Bandh Rakho, a dark comedy thriller where he played one of four robbers who hold a family hostage.
Pandey has carved a niche in playing comic relief roles, usually as outlandish characters. This is most notable in his memorable role as the Indo-Italian "Aakhiri Pasta" in the 2010 comedy hit Housefull which was lauded by critics and fans. He reprised his role in the sequel Housefull 2 in 2012 which also was a blockbuster.
Though he has recently been starring a character actor, Chunky doesn't want to be pigeonholed into doing comic roles. "I don't think I am restricting myself to doing only comedy. I am hoping that someone offers me something else," Pandey said. "It requires a lot of guts for someone to cast me in something else. I am just hoping that someone sees something else in me other than comedy."[3]
Pandey has gained notoriety as either a celebrity judge or host on reality TV game shows like the dance competition Zara Nachke Dikha and comedy contest shows like Laugh India Laugh and the The Great Indian Laughter Challenge.

Personal life[edit]

Pandey's parents are doctors. His mother Dr. Snehlata Pandey is famous dietolog and his father Dr. Sharad Pandey was a famous heart specialist. Chunky married Bhavna Pandey in 1998 and has two daughters. He decided to make a comeback to Bollywood during 2002 and ended up appearing in over a dozen movies. Apart from acting in movies, Chunky is involved in a business 'Bollywood Electric' which hosts stage shows. He and his wife Bhavna also run a health food restaurant in Mumbai, India.
