Face of the Year" (2004), and "Best Debut" (2004). Sikander's production company Chocolate Box Films Pvt. Ltd., founded in late 2012, has yet to announce its first production.
Actor (Early Work)[edit]
While working to establish herself in Mumbai's Bollywood industry, Sikander traveled hours, daily from the outskirts of the city to attend auditions,[6] often accompanied by her brother, Rizwan Sikander, also an actor.[7]
Her film debut came at the age of 16, in 1998 with the Hindi-language feature film Prem Aggan produced and directed by acclaimed film personality Feroz Khan.[8] After a friend suggested she screen test for the part, Sikander so impressed Feroz Khan that she landed the role, even though it had already been cast. Despite significant hype, the film, which also featured Feroz Khan's son Fardeen Khan's debut, was a both a critical and box office failure. Nevertheless, what favorable reviews the film garnered were with regard to Sikander's performance with one critic praising her screen presence and commenting “[Sikander is] friendly to the viewers' eyes.” [9]
A year later Sikander appeared in the Amir Khan starer Mann (1999 Hindi) in a cameo as 'Kamini'.[8] Directed by Indra Kumar the film received mixed reviews and did not do well at the box office. As with her debut in Prem Aggan, however, Sikander received positive reviews for her performance. Calling her “pretty and emotive”, Mohammad Ali Ikram of Planet Bollywood exclaimed “Mark my words, this simple stunner has the ability to shine as a great performer and star”.[10]
Ansh: The Deadly Part (2002) was Sikander's first lead role in a large budget Hindi language feature film. Portraying the character 'Kusum' opposite south Indian superstar Mirza Abbas Ali, the film produced by Rukamanee Arts was a box office success doing reasonably well and garnering generally favorable reviews. Seema Pant of Rediff commented “all [members of the cast] play their parts well”.[11] Despite Ansh being her best-faring feature film so far, Sikander would not have another big screen release for the next six years owing to her explosive TV success in the following year.
Actor (2003–present)[edit]
Though her feature films failed to establish Sikander as a box office success, her Television debut portraying the title character 'Pooja Metha' in the popular Sony TV drama Ye Meri Life Hai (2003-2005) made the show a household name overnight, gave her “instant fame”,[12][13] and eventually elevated her to “one of the most loved faces on Indian television.”.[14] Her performance earned her numerous nominations, her wins including The Indian Television Academy Awards' “GR8 Face of the Year” (2004), The Indian Television Academy Awards' "Best Debut" (2004), The 12th Annual Lion's Gold Awards' “Best Actress: Critics' Choice” (2005), and Sony TV's “Best Face” (2005).
Fueled by the success of Ye Meri Life Hai and her subsequent performances, Sikander would be seen in frequent guest appearances on various popular programs including Batliwala House No. 43 (in 2005), C.I.D. (Indian TV series) (in 2006), Jodee Kamaal Ki (in 2007), Kaajjal (in 2008), and Man Mein Hai Visshwas (in 2009).[8]
Beginning in 2007 Sikander also featured as a TV program Host – first of entertainment channel Zoom's Popkorn Newz for a single season, and then in 2008, as the host of the Star One travel-contest program Jet Set Go. An accomplished self-taught dancer and amateur singer, 2008 would also see Sikander appear on numerous programs including celebrity dance program Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena as a celebrity contestant alongside notable Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli (where she drew praise from Bollywood SuperstarSushmita Sen who called her "one of the most fabulous dancers I’ve ever seen”[15]), next in the singing reality program Jjhoom India again as a celebrity contestant, as well as India's longest running dance program Boogie Woogie as a celebrity guest performer in 2010 and subsequently on multiple occasions as a performer as a guest judge.[8] Her ability to showcase well in singing, dance, hosting as well as acting caused critics to comment on her versatility as a performer, identifying her as one of the few who have been able to navigate between film and television.[16]
While her TV career flourished Sikander returned to film in 2008 with Director Shashi Ranjan's Dhoom Dadakka. In the lead role of 'Jiya', alongside notable Bollywood actors Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher, Gulshan Grover, and Satish Kaushik, Sikander's performance stood out and was appreciated with Sify's Sonia Chopra commenting “Shama Sikander [is] earnest ... molten-hot and ... superbly styled”. In contrast, the film was a box office failure and regarded by critics as average[17][18] to disappointing.[19][20][21] The failure of the film was unanimously attributed to Director Shashi Ranjan's stewardship. Critic Chopra commenting “The cast doesn’t disappoint as much as the film”,[19] with Bollywood Trade News Network's Martin D'Souza agreeing “director Shashi Ranjan has assembled a talented star cast and is not able to handle their talents”,[22] and Joginder Tuteja of Naach Gaana adding “one can’t really blame [Shama] for the mess she has been subjected to!”.[21]
2010 saw Sikander return to a lead role in a television series for the first time since leaving Ye Meri Life Hai in 2005. Sikander's 'Shunyaa' featured as the central character in the supernatural thriller series Seven (2010-2011 Hindi) produced by the Bollywood juggernaut Yash Raj Films. With a production budget far in excess of any television program that came before,[23] YRF's Seven aired weekly episodes instead of daily, in contrast to its competing programing.[23] Sikander's performance and the program as a whole was widely appreciated for being “daringly different”,[24] with its own “dedicated audience”[25] eliciting a “huge response through ... platforms like internet, e-mails and social networking sites.”[26] Nevertheless perhaps due to its weekly format, lack of significant promotion, excessive production budget, and YRF's primary focus on its film division, Seven experienced only niche viewership[27][28] and was eventually brought to a close after only one season of 26 episodes.[25]
After a short break Sikander took the role of the main antagonist 'Byankar Pari' in the young-adult fantasy program Baal Veer starting in September 2012.[29] Despite rumors of Sikander's departure from the show in April 2013,[30][31] she continues to feature in the second season of the Hindi language daily on SAB TV. Baal Veer stands as one of the channel's, and indeed the market segment's, highest rated programs.[32][33]
Designer (2010–present)[edit]
On December 3, 2010 Sikander launched her women's wear fashion label Saisha in the upscale Mumbai suburb of Bandra West,[34] with the high profile and widely covered inauguration attended by her close friends and Bollywood superstars Sushmita Sen andJackie Shroff.[35][36] Sikander has showcased her collection numerous times since, often, but not always, appearing on the ramp in her own designs.[37] Saisha has appeared both domestically in Hyderabad Fashion Week [7] and Mumbai's Lakme Fashion Week,[38]as well as internationally, most notably in South Africa.[11]
Film, Music & Music Video Producer (2012–present)[edit]
Opting in late 2012 to divide her attention between performance and production, Sikander incorporated the Film and TV production company Chocolate Box Films Pvt. Ltd. which has yet to announce its first project.[39]
Having previously featured in a number of music videos in Punjabi and other Indian languages (most notably for acclaimed singer Abhijeet[40]) in late 2012 Sikander reportedly produced a (very sensuous) music video featuring herself alongside boyfriend actor / musician Alexx O'Nell picturising his original English language composition entitled 'Still On My Mind'.[41] The video, which marks their first on screen collaboration has not yet been released, and it is uncertain if it was produced under the newly formed Chocolate Box Films Pvt. Ltd. banner.[42] Reports also indicate that she may be producing an entire English language album authored by O'Nell.[43]
In The Media[edit]
Sikander's sex appeal has been picked up on by many sources, focussing on her fitness regimen, diet, and style sense.[28][44][45][46][47]
She has been featured in numerous magazine spreads as well as appearing on the cover of GR8! Magazine more than any other actress, three times for the English Edition: March 2010,[48] July 2006,[49] February 2005,[50] as well as at least twice for the Hindi Edition. She also appeared on the cover of Showtime Magazine in December 2011.[51] Sikander was deemed October 2011's 'Hottie of the Month' by Perfect Woman Magazine,[52] and featured in the 'Perfect Woman Spotlight' in May 2013[53] and Zing Magazine's 'Travel Diaries' in March 2013.[54]
Additionally, Sikander has appeared in print and on the ramp supporting various notable fashion labels and designers including Manish Malhotra & Shaina NC,[55] Neeta Lulla, Nisha Jamvwal, the world renowned Ritu Kumar, as well as her own brand Saisha.[37] In addition to heading the creative development of Saisha's women's wear designs, Sikander who has been referred to as a “fashion connoisseur”[37] even reportedly contributed design expertise for the creation of wardrobe for her currently-running Baal Veer television program.[56]
Listing among her activities kickboxing, power yoga and dance, Sikander has commented “fitness has always been an integral part of my daily routine … I ensure that I work out everyday [sic] for at least an hour … [I] eat right and think positive.”[44]
Sikander's hobbies, including the violin,[57] photography[58] and most recently abstract painting,[59] often feature in media coverage.
The actress is also said to be multi-lingual, speaking six languages including Hindi, English, Urdu, Gujarati, Marathi and Marwadi (of her native Rajasthan).[57]
Personal life[edit]
Relationships[edit]
Sikander's personal life and relationships are often the subject of media attention.
In 2010 Indian gossip columnist Vicky Lalwani linked Sikander to actor Mimoh Chakraborty – a claim both parties denied.[60] Shama Sikander is a good friend with Indian businessman Sahil Peerzada, [61]
In mid-2011 speculation began regarding Sikander's relationship with India-based American actor / musician Alexx O'Nell[62] The two were spotted with increasing frequency throughout 2011 and Sikander confirmed that they were indeed in a relationship in an interview which featured on the cover of Showtime Magazine's December 2011 issue, entitled “Shama Sikander Finally Breaks Her Silence On Her Relationship With Alexx O'Nell”.[51] More recently, a June 2012 interview with Sikander disclosed that the two met through friends at a sundown party .. and that she was "won over nearly immediately after he played some music for her ... tatto asked, how can i loose weight?i have gained some extra pounds how to get rid of it
Shama Sikander answers, consult a good dietician. get the right kinda diet. do brisk walking every day for an hour.
Chanter asked, Hi how to gain weight? m too slim..
Shama Sikander answers, have a lot of banana milk shakes.
Nilesh asked, Hi shama, Could you tell me what sort of excercises you do for your smile? I really like your smile a lot...
Shama Sikander answers, haha. i guess i smile a lot. it comes naturally.
Harsh asked, Shama u look very very beautiful and have a wonderfully fit body !!! Can u please tell me Which was the movie u have acted in and which r ur forthcoming movies ??? Thanks .
Shama Sikander answers, thank you very much. i have acted in a movie called dhoom dhadaka. and my forthcoming movies are yet to be titled because they are in the scripting stages
red asked, REDIFF kindly let us knw the chat is on/off/delayed
Shama Sikander answers, hey sorry we are all in the middle of a forest. and the rediff guys were trying to look for me. but we are all online now. so you can shoot your questions
vinod asked, Hi Anyone can tell me how can I reduce my tummy?
Shama Sikander answers, do a lot of crunches. walk every day for about an hour at least. and eat right.
suppandi asked, atleast 3-4 hrs i do go to gym and eat lot of food with fibers - then too unable to reduce weight. Can you please suggest some tips to keep fit
Shama Sikander answers, it is very wrong to be in the gym for three to four hours. you need a max hour long workout but it should be the right kind of workout. and eat right amount of proteins and carbs as well as fibre. ask your trainer what exercise suits you best and dont waste your time on anything else
hjj456 asked, Hahaha! NO, I wanted to ask her how she maitnains such a toned body, I mean I also go to gym and work out and I think I have a decent body, but want to get it more perfectly into shape! Any answers?!
Shama Sikander answers, if you really want a perfect body you have to sacrifice every fattening thing. measure everything before eating and just do proper exercise you will be fit
neha asked, hi shama , i wanna know your routine early from the morning till u go to sleep including ur diet in between
Shama Sikander answers, i wake up at whatever time i'm required to wake up. then i have two glasses of luke warm water with a little lime in it. then i go for my walk, which is for an hour or my kickboxing or weight training depending on my schedule. after my workout, i have a bowl of museli or fruit. then i have some snacks in between -- some fruit or biscuits. then i have my lunch at 2 pm. snack again at 4.30 pm or a fruit. then around 6.30 7 i have another small meal -- could be a salad. and at night i have salad, soup or a lot of fruits.
sndeepak asked, what is the best fitness regimen
Shama Sikander answers, yoga, stretching and walking.
newwealth asked, Does intake of alcohol on weeknds effects your health...?
Shama Sikander answers, anything done in moderation is fine. avoid overdoing anything... alcohol or otherwise
sadaf asked, Hi, need to know what foods to really avoid
Shama Sikander answers, junk food, pizzas, burgers, too much oil -- go for olive oil, ice creams, sweets, have fruits or dates if you feel like having sweets (that also not too much).
shiva asked, Shama do u think ur sexy ?
Shama Sikander answers, yes. i think i am.
Chanter asked, Hi Shama.. how r u doin? I used to atch your serial.. U hav developed a lot from there.. wats d difference u made.. diet or workout?
Shama Sikander answers, i am fine thank you. a lot of difference actually. earlier i used to only run because i was very thin and my character didnt require me to be anything more. but now for SEVEN i was supposed to look fit and strong at the same time. so i had to change my diet, workout... everything. so from just running i have moved on to kickboxing, yoga, spinning and weight training. kickboxing helps me to be mentally and physically strong. weight training tones my body. yoga keeps me calm and gives me spiritual strength. stretching of course makes me flexible.
Austin asked, Hi howz u dng...need some tips to reduce weight
Shama Sikander answers, If you love dancing, dance a lot. it is one of the best exercises anyone can do. if you like to listen to music, put your iPod on and walk for an hour at least. eat right and healthy
ggg asked, Don't u think that your looks always have a lot to do with good genes? I mean, your hair, skin, height etc? I don't have those natural endowments, how do I manage to look good?
Shama Sikander answers, yes of course i have to thank my parents because they are good looking people. good looks enhance when you feel good from inside. think you are beautiful, feel beautiful you will start looking beautiful. everyone is born beautiful.
sikander asked, hi shama, does having lemon water with honey daily help in reducing weight. Any suggestion on how to stop eating unnecessarily between meals. thanks in advance
Shama Sikander answers, it depends. if your body works in a particular way. lemon water surely helps to keep your system clean and gives you good skin. stop thinking of food. do something else. if you have the urge to eat something eat fruits or salad. these days you get a lot of diet food. try some of that instead of having something unhealthy
sannu asked, hi Shama.. Am regular to gym since 1 year. I have lost 3 kg during this time. My weight is now 49.5 kg my height is 5.1. I find it very difficult to loose those extra pounds. I eat every 2-3 hr ( try my best but cheat sumtimes ). I also want to loose my love handles, and am fine over all i guess. Can you suggest some Diet or Exercise? My profession doesnt allow me to take up any fitness or sports... :( I do yoga sometimes and have green tea as well.. :( I want to weight 45 kg ( 49.5 present )and waist of bout 24-25 ( 26.5 present )inch.
Shama Sikander answers, i think your weight is fine according to your height. but if you want to lose some more i guess you have to -- as you said -- stop cheating :-P and of course be committed to your goal. and be more regular with yoga and stretching -- that will help you get rid of the love handles.
indian asked, can everyone gain 6 packs. does it depend on genes, can we overcome genes to get 6 packs?
Shama Sikander answers, everyone has six packs. you just have to work on it. it requires a lot of commitment. but you are born with it. it is nothing. just a layer of fat on your body. if you dont have fat you will see those six packs :-)
YuvaraajP asked, Hi, I do gym regularly almost 2 years but i don't gain any museles, should i go for any protein poweder and diet to increase
Shama Sikander answers, i would suggest you ask your trainer. because s/he will be able to tell you better and also since i havent seen you
saumya asked, After pregnancy(operation) to get in shape just tell in few words complete diet morning to night and exercise to get in shape
Shama Sikander answers, erm... i have no idea because i have never been pregnant ! :-)
sf1979@rediffmail.com asked, Hi Shama.... I go swimming thrice a week first thing in the morn for around 2 - 3 hrs..... but i cant seem to eat anything before dat as i feel a lot like puking! I have Glucon D before swimming and by the time i finish swimming i'm very hungry and have my breakfast comprising oats / chapati / coffee etc! Pls advise if i'm doing the right thing
Shama Sikander answers, yeah i guess it is.
sai asked, how i can loose my weight
Shama Sikander answers, eat right. and scroll down and check some of the responses :-P
rinky asked, i have thyroid problem becoz of this i gain too much weight i wanted to know how i can loose my weight from arm and tummy area to look better
Shama Sikander answers, consult your doc because its a problem i cant resolve. ask your doc what you can avoid and cannot.
barath asked, Shama, what would you call a healthy diet ? Should we avoid fatty foods ?
Shama Sikander answers, yes you should avoid fatty foods. healthy diet means a mixture of proteins, carbs, fibres and flavour of course. it definitely does not mean staying hungry.
dinesh asked, hi shama how you maintain your fitness give some tips to us

ganesh asked, How effective is Crash diet in loosing weight?
Shama Sikander answers, it is effective but the effect is short term -- it won't last for a long time
RajeevR asked, Hi Shama...I continuously work on computer for 10-12 hours, how should I keep my spine and shoulders fit as it sort of give me problem every now and then
Shama Sikander answers, do a lot of shoulder and back exercises. if you go to the gym the trainer will show you how to do it. try and sit in the correct posture.
