Denied a ticket again from the reserved Sirsa Lok Sabha constituency, sitting Congress MP Atma Singh Gill has become the first rebel candidate of the party in the state.
Immediately after the Congress gave the Sirsa ticket to All India Youth Congress President Ashok Tanwar, Gill announced his resignation from the party. He also declared that he would contest the Lok Sabha elections from Sirsa constituency as an independent candidate.
The Congress has renominated as many as six sitting MPs in the state, including Deepinder Singh Hooda, Selja, Navin Jindal, Dr Arvind Sharma,Jai Prakash and Avtar Singh Bhadana. Gill is the only sitting Congress MP who has been denied ticket.
The denial of ticket to Gill has not come as a surprise. All along, there were talks that he was not likely to get the ticket again. On one hand, his performance had not been something to talk about. Secondly, the unsavoury incident in a guest house in Sirsa in his presence also went against him.
But the biggest factor in the denial of ticket to Gill was perhaps the opinion of AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, who is trying to give a push to the youth brigade in the country. In his opinion, the young Ashok Tanwar was the right choice instead of the ageing Gill. This is despite the fact that Tanwar is considered an outsider, because of being from the Jhajjar assembly constituency, while Gill was a local.
Nevertheless, Tanwar got the party's nod, while Gill missed the bus. Former union minister and Chairman of the National SC cell, Buta Singh of the Congress too was a candidate for the Sirsa seat, but the age factor went against him, say sources in the Congress.
When contacted, Gill said that Congress had done a wrong thing by denying a ticket to him. "I have worked so hard for the party and the people in the last five years and expected a reward, rather than the shock of being denied the ticket. People have faith in me, and I will prove this by contesting the Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate,'' he said. "At the same time I will also expose the Congress to the public,'' Gill added.
