Biography: Raghubir Yadav, also known as Raghubir Yadav is a renowned Indian film, television and stage actor, singer, set designer and music composer.
Raghubir’s career spans over several domains such as theatre, film, music and television. He had been involved with the Parsi Theatre Company and he appeared as an actor as well as a singer in more than seventy plays and over two thousand five hundred shows. He spent his early career travelling places in caravans, staying in tents and giving performances in various cities, villages and towns. He stayed with the Parsi Theatre Company from 1967 to 1973. Next up he started performing with glove puppets during 1973-1974 while he was working at the Rangoli Puppet Theatre situated in Lucknow. During 1977 to 1986, as a member of the National School of Drama Reperatory, Raghubir acted in around forty plays and over two thousand shows. Not only did he act, but he had also given his inputs to the accompanying sets, costumes, masks and music.
In the department of cinema, his very first film was in the year 1985 when he appeared in Pradip Krishen’s ‘Massey Sahib’ starring Barry John, Arundhati Roy and Veerendra Saxena. Here Raghubir played the award winning role of the protagonist, Francis Massey. His performance in the film was well appreciated by both the critics as well as the audience and as a result, he won two International Awards in the Best Actor category. After ‘Massey Sahib’, Raghubir signed up for various films which went a long way. 3 films in which he has acted have received nominations for the Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film. These films include ‘Water’, ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Salaam Bombay!’. One of his most famous roles include the one in ‘Salaam Bombay’ (1988) where he played the role of a drug addict called Chillum. In the year 2011, he appeared in ‘Dear Friend Hitler’, directed by Rakesh Ranjan Kumar and starring Neha Dhupia and Aman Verma. This film derives its name from two letters which Mahatma Gandhi had written to Adolf Hitler, one in the year 1939 before the second World War, and the other in 1940 after the war began.
Raghubir began his career in television with the 1990 television series called ‘Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne’ directed by Prakash Jha. Here he played the lead role of Mungerilal, a clerk who gets bossed around by his senior at office and by his wife at home. Later on he enacted the role of Haji Naseeruddin in the television series ‘Mulla Naseeruddin’ and later on he played the lead role in ‘Chacha Chadhary’. He had even played the main role in ‘Arjun Pandit’.
In the department of music, he contributed a lot to the film industry. Some of the projects which he had worked in include ‘Dilli 6’, ‘Issaq’, ‘Maya Memsaab’, ‘Rudaali’, ‘Massey Sahib’, ‘Aasmaan Se Gira’, ‘Samar’, ‘O Darling ye hai India’, ‘Sunday’, ‘Ramaji London waale’, ‘Darna mana hai’ and ‘Billu Barber’. He had even sung the title track of ‘Chacha Chaudhary’. His song, “Mehngai Dayain” in ‘Peepli Live’ was praised and appreciated by many people. Raghubir Yadav (also credited as Raghuvir Yadav) is an Indian film, stage and television actor, music composer, singer and set designer. He made his film debut with Massey Sahib (1985) in which Yadav played the title role.[1][2] Incidentally he has never won the National Award but two International Awards as Best Actor for Massey Sahib,[3] FIPRESCI Critic's Award, Venice Film Festival, 1986 and the Best Actor Silver Peacock, IIFI, 1987.[3] The film also starred the noted writer and social activist, Arundhati Roy. Theatre[edit]
Yadav performed as an actor and singer in over 70 plays and about 2500 shows, travelling in caravans, living in tents and performing on makeshift stages in villages, towns and cities of India with the Parsi Theatre Company (1967–1973). He was with the Rangoli Puppet Theatre, Lucknow (1973–1974), performing with glove puppets. At the National School of Drama Repertory (1977–1986), he acted in about 40 plays in over 2000 shows. He has also contributed to music, sets, costumes and masks.
Film[edit]
He was seen in many milestone films in the coming decades. Three films that he has acted in have received Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film (Salaam Bombay!, Lagaan, and Water). Raghubir Yadav is the only Indian actor to have received the Silver Peacock Best Actor Award, at the International Film Festival of India. His most acclaimed role was as the drug addicted "Chillum" in Salaam Bombay! (1988). He was acted in Firaaq In 2011 he plays the lead role in the film Dear Friend Hitler which takes its name from two letters Mahatma Gandhi wrote Adolf Hitler, in 1939 immediately before World War II and Christmas Eve 1940 after the war had started, to prevent and to stop the war.

Yadav started his television career with the TV series Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne (1990), playing the lead character 'Mungerilal'. Later he played the roles of Haji Nasruddin the series Mulla Nasiruddin and the lead in Chacha Chaudhary. He also played the lead role for BI T.V. in Arjun Pandit.

- He composes and sings in films that include Maya Memsaab, Massey Sahib, Rudaali, Aasmaan Se Gira, O Darling ye hai India, Samar, Sunday, Darna mana hai, Ramaji London waale, Billu Barber, Dilli 6. He sang the title song of Chacha Chaudhary. He sang a song in Amir Khan's Peepli Live called "Mehngai Dayain" with bhadwai village mandli in which he was later praised by many topguns of Indian film fraternity
- He provided singing and voice for ads: Pepsi, Parle, Vim, Kotak Mahindra, Icy Cool Mint, Coke, Midday, Bagh Bakari Chai, Crack cream, Maggie Mania, Britannia etc.
- He also sang and composed the famous MP tourism ad -'MP a jab hai, sabse gazab hai'
- He composed music for Ghasiram Kotwal, Chotte Sayeed Bade Sayeed, Chaupra Kamaal Naukar Jamal, Chacha Chaudhary, ballet for song and drama division. Composed and sang "Maggie Mania", conceived, written and composed by Ramlila for Dilli 6.
- He recently collaborated with Hitesh Sonik to sing 'Lamh Tera' in the second episode of Coke Studio @ MTV, Season 2. The show was aired on MTV India on 14 July and this song was the fifth and last to be shown on the show. The song is a folk song from Madhya Pradesh. In ancient times, the journey from one place to another would take days. People while travelling would then usually sing to ensure everyone is safe. This style of singing was called 'lum tera'. A member/group at the front of the caravan would sing loudly (lambi ter) and the members/groups at the end would sing back as a response, thereby ensuring connectivity.[4]
- He has sung a song Bhagan ke Rekhan ki bahangiya in movie Issaq. Raghubir has shown his talent again.
