Bhagwant Mann (born 17 October 1973) is an Indian comedian and the Member of Parliament (May 2014) from Sangrur constituency of Indian state of Punjab.

Early life and career[edit]

Bhagwant Mann was born in village Satauj located in Sangrur district. He is well known for his skits in the Punjabi language. He started his comedy career by participating in youth festivals and inter-college competitions. He won two gold medals from Punjabi University, Patiala for Shaheed Udham Singh Government College, Sunam. His second comedy album entitled "Kulfi Garma Garm" proved to be a huge success. Bhagwant Mann's comedy focuses on Indian issues – politicians, policemen, business departments, and sports. His first comedy album was with Jagtar Jaggi and together they were the most successful comedy partnership of the 1990s, creating many successful comedy albums. They also created a show for the Punjabi channel Alpha ETC Punjabi, called Jugnu Kehnda Hai. After 10 years together, Jaggi and Mann split when Jaggi felt he was not getting the credit he deserved.[1] After their split, Bhagwant Mann became partners with writer and co-actor Rana Ranbir. Both were very popular and worked together on Jugnu Mast Mast for Alpha ETC Punjabi. In 2006, it was announced that Bhagwant & Jaggi had settled their differences and were due to reunite. Both toured Canada & England with their stage play No Life With Wife.
Bhagwant also gained nationwide recognition when he competed in the Great Indian Laughter Challenge on Star Plus. This widened his audience and made him popular throughout the world. He is nowadays the world's most appreciated Punjabi comedian.[2][3] Bhagwant Mann also acted in a show on MH One called Jugnu Hazir Hai[4] and featured in Manjit Mann's film Sukhmani alongside Gurdas Maan.

Politics[edit]

In early 2011, he joined active politics of Punjab with his membership of People's Party of Punjab under the leadership of Manpreet Singh Badal.[5][6] He unsuccessfully contested elections from Lehragaga assembly constituency in 2012 Punjab Assembly Elections. He left the People's Party of Punjab in March 2014 and joined Aam Aadmi Party to contest as its candidate from Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency in the Indian General Election 2014 . [7] He won by 200,000 votes, setting a new record in Punjab defeating Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, a prominent leader of Shiromani Akali Dal and now a member of Rajya Sabha. After becoming an MP, Mann has consistently used satire to raise the issues faced by the common man. He has also questioned the incumbent government on their electoral promises and the policies being introduced by them.[8]

Social work[edit]

He set up a NGO Lok Lehar Foundation to help children affected from deformities due to polluted groundwater in the border areas of Punjab.[9]
