Biography: Dhanush was born on the 28th of July, 1983 to Kasthuri Raja, who was a well-known film director. He completed his higher studies from the St. John Matriculation Higher Secondary School Alwarthirunagar. Under the pressure given by his brother cum director Selvaraghavan, Dhanush decided to take acting as his career.

Dhanush, the Tamil lyricist, actor, producer and playback singer made his first entry into the industry with his father’s film ‘Thulluvado Llamai’, starring Dhanush himself, Sherin, Abhinay, Ramesh, Shilpa, Gangeshwari and Ramesh Khanna.This movie was directed by his father and the story was written by his brother, Selvaraghavan. This film was a blockbuster and it brought to him the much needed glory that he craved for in his first film.

Dhanush came under the limelight with his brother, Selvaraghavan’s very first directional venture titled ‘Kadhal Kondein’, starring Dhanush, Sonia Agarwal, Sudeep, Nagesh, Srikanth and Daniel Balaji. This film, which was released on the 4th of July, 2003, portrayed Dhanush as Vinod, a mentally disturbed young man, who fell in love with his friend (played by Sonia Agarwal) and eventually this love turning into possessiveness over her. This film was a huge success and it catapulted him into the main foray of Tamil actors in the Tamil film industry. Next up, he starred in Subramaniam Siva’s ‘Thiruda Thirudi’ along with Chaya Singh and Manikka Vinayagam. This was Dhanush’s first ever hero centric movie and he received lots of positive feedback for his performance in the movie.

During 2004 and 2005, Dhanush had a setback in his acting career as most of his films released during this time gap were failures at the box office. Although the first three of his movie released during this period were comparatively profitable, the rest were just big commercial failures. His first failure was ‘Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan’, directed and written by S. S. Stanley and featuring Dhanush and Aparna Pillai in the lead roles. Next up he appeared in Ramana’s 2004 Tamil flick named ‘Sullan’. This film again was a box office failure. His third failure was Kasthuri Raja’s 2004 film titled ‘Dreams’, starring Dhanush, Diya and Parul Yadav. ‘Dream’s remains to be one of Dhanush’s biggest failures till date.

In 2005, Dhanush appeared to two films which were average grossers. The first was Boopathy Pandian’s ‘Devathayai Kanden’, starring Dhanush himself along with Sridevi Vijaykumar. His second movie was ‘Adhu Oru Kanu Kaalam’, directed by Balu Mahendra and produced by Sai Suresh. This film was an off beat venture and inspite of receiving rave reviews, it did not do well at the theatres.

In terms of film budget, one of Dhanush’s biggest projects was the 2006 Tamil gangster flick titled ‘Pudhupettai’, directed by Selvaraghavan and starring Dhanush, Sneha and Sonia Agarwal. This film was praised worldwide but it failed to capture the attention of the Tamil audience and it just became an average grosser film. The version of this movie which was dubbed in Tamil (titled ‘Dhoolpet’) fared slightly better. Later on, Dhanush appeared in Boopathy Pandian’s comedy flick titled ‘Thiruvilaiyaadal Arambam’, starring Dhanush, Prakash Raj and Sriya Saran. This film became Dhanush’s first hit film in three years.

In the year 2007, Dhanush’s first release was the Suresh Krishna directed ‘Parattai Engira Azhagu Sudaram’, starring Dhanush, Meera Jasmine and Archana. This movie which was a remake of ‘Jogi’, a Kannada language movie, failed at the box office and in the process it received lots of negative reviews. Next up, Dhanush made his appearance in the 2007 Vetrimaaran directed Tamil flick titled ‘Polladhavan’. This film, packed with his stupendous performance, was a blockbuster at the theatres. This movie which was based on Vittorio De Sica’s ‘The Bicycle Thieves’ casted Dhanush opposite the well-known Divya Spandana.

In 2008, he starred in Mithran Jawahar’s Tamil drama flick titled ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’, which was a remake of the Telegu film, ‘Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule’, directed by his brother, Selvaraghavan. ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’ which was released on the 4th of April, 2008 was a big blockbuster at the theatres. Next up he did a special appearance in a song sequence in the Ranjnikanth starrer ‘Kuselan’, directed by P. Basu. Next up in 2009, he was seen opposite Tamannaah Bhatiya in Suraj’s Tamil action comedy, ‘Padikathavan’, starring Dhanush, Tamannaah, Sayaji Shinde, Atul Kulkarni, Suman and Pratap Pothan. He received lots of accolades and appreciation for his spectacular performance in this film. In the year 2010, he appeared in Mithran Jawahar’s ‘Uthamaputhiran’ and ‘Kutty’, both of which were hits despite receiving mixed reviews.

In 2011, Dhanush’s very first release was the Vetrimaran directed ‘Aadukalam’, which he had been working for over three years. This film where Dhanush played the role of a cockfighter, got lots of positive reviews and it won 6 awards at the 58th National Film Awards. Dhanush himself received the National Film Best Actor Award for his performance in this film and he became one of the youngest actors to receive this award. Next up Dhanush did an extended cameo in ‘Seedan’, directed by Subramania Siva, where he portrayed the character of a god. Dhanush’s next two projects were action packed films: the first being ‘Mappillai’, directed by Suraj and the second was ‘Venghai’, directed by Hari. Both of these films received mixed reviews. Following these two films, he appeared in the 2011 Selvaraghavan directed romantic drama flick titled ‘Mayakkam Enna’, starring Dhanush and Richa Gangopadhyay and this film was successful at the box office. One of Dhanush’s recent films includes the Tamil romantic thriller directed by Aishwariya Rajnikanth, his wife. Titled ‘3’, this film paired Dhanush with Shruti Saran and even befire this film was released, this film gained a lot of popularity with the release of ‘Why This Kolaveri Di’, a song from the film’s soundtrack. ‘Why This Kolaveri Di’, which was written and sung by Dhanush became a hit worldwide. He had also sung another song in this film named ‘Kannazhaga’.

Some of his upcoming projects include Bharat Bhala’s ‘Mariyaan’ and the Aanand L. Rai directed ‘Raanjhnaa’. ‘Raanjhnaa’ would be Dhanush’s first ever Hindi film. Dhanush had also signed up for his second Hindi film, where he would play the role of Dashrath Manji, in Manish Jha’s biopic. Apart from the above films, Dhanush has also enrolled himself in Thomson K. Thomas’s ‘Kammath & Kammath’ which would be Dhanush’s first Malayalam film.
