    Chandrabati Devi was born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar on October 19th, 1909. Her nickname was Chhoton. Her father was Ganga Prasad Sahu. Chandrabati was the younger sister of Kankabati, the noted film actress. Chandrabati was educated in Bramho Balika Sikshayala and there after in Bethun College in Kolkata. 

    She got her first break as a character artist in the silent movie “Piyari” in 1929. Later she approved as Meera in the double version takie “Meera Bai” in 1933 directed by Debika Basu. She was selected in the role of Meera in the insistence of actor Amar Mallick. Her acting and singing in that film were highly praised. She took her music lessons from Dinu Talukdar under the supervision of Rabindranath Tagore.

    After the success of “Meera Bai” she was called from Bombay. She acted in one film with Ashok Kumar but that film never released due to some unknown reason. Her major films were “Dakhsa Yagna”, “Debdas”, “Prijaya”, “Baro Didi”, “Pather Datri”, “Durgesh Nandini”, etc. She was married to producer Bimal Paul. Along with her husband she established a film producing company “Movie Theatre”. In their films Chandabati’s name was printed as the producer. In fact she was the first woman producer in Bengali Film Industry. She was the first proprietor of Movie theatre “Talkie Theatre House”. She was the editor and publisher of film magazine “Bioscope”. After 12 years of retirement she again came back in film acting in film like “Chhinnapatra”, “Aami Sirajer Begam”, “Atattar Din Par” etc. She received the best actress award from BFJA in the year 1945 for her acting in the film “Dui Purush”. She died in Kolkata on April 29th, 1992.
